Prasiolite is formed like other quartz crystals when a silicon-water mixture pools into fill pockets and crevices in the Earth’s crust. The first stage of creating prasiolite is actually for purple amethyst to form.
After the purple amethyst is created, heat needs to be applied to the amethyst crystals to turn into prasiolite. This is why some call prasiolite green quartz by the name “Green Amethyst”.
Naturally formed prasiolite is created when lava flows around amethyst heating the crystal up. The heat from the lava converts it from purple in color to shades of green. If the heat is too high, it will continue past green and eventually begin to lose color going to lighter shades into yellow then cream white. Most of the prasiolite on the market is naturally created in this way.
Prasiolite can be created in a lab by heating regular amethyst in an oven to around 500 degrees Celsius.
