Vivianite is commonly a green, blue, and/or black soft hydrated iron phosphate mineral with the purest form being colorless if it has not oxidized. However, the mineral oxidizes easily resulting in it turning from colorless to shades of green, blue, and/or black.
Vivianite can be in crystal form or be in masses/concentrations on top of other structures. In general, they will be parallel to the structure it is attached to, however, some rare crystals may grow perfectly perpendicular to the base structure.
Vivianite crystals can often be found inside fossils like bivalves and gastropods or growing from fossilized bones. They also grow on metal ore deposits where the metal ore lies in the oxidation zone, in phosphate-rich granite pegmatites, in clay, or in other organic materials such as bog iron, forest soil, lignite, or peat.
